Today when you login, you’ll see some big changes have come to Book Country. We’ve brought back following and designed a new homepage that’s as unique as you!
On the left, you can see the start of the newsfeed that we’re building. For now, you’ll see announcements from the Book Country team, but in a few weeks, that will be the spot where you’ll be able to keep up with the comings and goings of the community.
The right side gives you easy access to the discussions and books you’ve chosen to follow. (If you followed books or discussions before we re-launched, you should see them appear once you’ve logged in.)
What is Following?
Following is a way to keep track of the books and discussions that matter most to you. You can see the list of what you’re following on the right side of the homepage when you’re logged in. If you’re following a lot of discussions or books, click “See All” to view the full list.
Navigate to the manuscript that you’d like to follow. You’ll see a follow button directly below the cover. Click it and you’ll start following the book. Click it again to stop following that title.
How to Follow Discussions
Navigate to the discussion forum. You can follow all of the discussions in the forum, discussions under a particular topic, or all of the posts in a thread.
In order to follow all of the discussions, click on the envelope at the top, under the “Discussions” header.
That will bring up the Subscriptions window. Choose whether you want to follow every post or only the ones that are replies to you. Then, hit “Subscribe” and you’ll start to see the most recent posts appear on your homepage.
If you want to follow discussions under a particular topic, navigate to that topic. Click on the envelope on the right, next to the “New Topic” button. That will also bring up the Subscriptions window. Choose whether you want to follow every post or only the ones that are replies to you. Then, hit “Subscribe” and you’ll start to see the most recent posts appear on your homepage.
To follow all of the posts in a single thread, navigate to the thread that interests you. Click on the envelope on the left, next to the “Add Reply” button. That will also bring up the Subscriptions window. Choose whether you want to follow every post or only the ones that are replies to you. Then, hit “Subscribe” and you’ll start to see the most recent posts appear on your homepage.
Manage all of the discussions you’re following through the Control Panel, which you can get to from the main Discussions page. Stop following a forum or topic by clicking the check box and then hitting “Unsubscribe” at the bottom of the page.
We’ve also added some features designed to strengthen the connections you make on Book Country. When you go to a connection’s profile page, you’ll be able to see the books that member is following. You’ll also be able to see the connections that person has made.
Note: If you are not connected to another member, that member will not be able to see your connections or books followed and you won’t be able to see that person’s connections or books followed.
Before the re-launch, members could follow one another without connecting. We thought about that a lot and believe, as a community, it’s more meaningful to connect with the people around us instead of watch them from afar.
If you were following members, now is a great time to connect with them. To do that, go to My Connections under the Connect menu. Click on the Recommendations tab. The Book Country members who you were following now appear in your recommendation list. Choose “Connect” to be able to send them private messages and see the people and manuscripts that matter to them.
It’s our plan to keep improving Book Country so that it’s the easiest place for you to make connections, interact with your community, and create the best book possible. Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime, happy writing!
